.50 Browning Machine Gun - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=28

The .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge (.50
BMG) was inspired by the effectiveness of German
anti-tank rifles of WWI. John Browning
subsequently developed the fully-automatic heavy
machine gun and ammunition, adopted by the
military in 1923. The cartridge remains in use
today not only by the U.S., but all over the
world.
In relatively recent developments,
the .50 BMG's role has expanded. It is now
employed in sniper-rifle configuration - its heavy, hign-velocity, low-drag
bullet providing thousands of yards of
effective range. The US military began using the .50 BMG
for this purpose after it had been effectively adapted by the civilian market
for use in long-range match competition. The current use of the .50 BMG in the
military and police sniper role is perhaps the most recent example of how America has
been advanced by civilian marksmanship and hunting programs.
Despite its hefty price tag, use of the .50 BMG rifle
by sports shooters has steadily risen over the past decade. Sophisticated rifles from
such companies as McMillan and Barrett fetch
prices of $7000 or more, while simpler designs
are available in the low $2000 range. Many .50 BMG rifles are capable of
consistently producing groups under 3 inches at
1000 yards.
Nominally, the .50 BMG propels a 720 grain
bullet at 2910 fps, producing nearly 13,000
ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Benchrest rifle employ
weight and special muzzle porting (applying
muzzle blast rearward) to maintain recoil at
manageable levels. Because of the intensity and
redirection of muzzle blast, special
consideration must be given to personnel
positioned to the sides of the shooter.

In 2004, the anti-gun lobby drew first blood against the .50 BMG in California with
the passage of AB 50.
This henious legislation classifies .50 BMG guns as "assault weapons", even single-shot rifles
weighing as much as 40 pounds. The law also requires registration of existing guns and effectively bans future sales and transfers.
In the first federal vote targeting the .50 BMG, in June 2005 Congress rejected
an attempt by Congressman Moran (D-VA) to ban the export of .50 BMG rifles.

|
| Never directly use a published charge unless it is specifically marked as a starting load.
For all other listings, unless otherwise noted, reduce published charges by 3-5% to
produce a starting load for your gun. Then, incrementally work up,
being watchful for signs of over pressure. Best accuracy may be realized far below a listed maximum charge.
One may not be able to actually reach a full published charge if their gun produces greater pressure than was
experienced in the development firearm. Stay alert when reloading - be careful!
